While it is possible to survive in a desert without shoes or water, it is not advisable to try. Nor should any organization attempt to do anything without a proper plan. Disasters, cost over-runs and debilitating friction will be the result. Planners must be familiar with state of the art software like P3. Planners must not spend their days thinking of excuses why a task might not be completed, but should spend the time making the task happen. While their primary job is to develop the plan for management's use, they must take some ownership for the plan as well as it is being executed. Planners must have energy and know all the tricks of the trade.
Logistics or Procurement Specialists
These are the lungs of the organization. If someone has asthma, no matter how hard he may try to breath, the oxygen just doesn't quite make it into the bloodstream. Businesses need to interface with the outside world. Logistics or procurement specialists are the ones to facilitate the transfer of money, things and information to keep you alive and kicking. They must be knowledgeable of shipping, customs, warehousing, contracts, legal, and communications. They should care enough to minimize costs, but know how to do "whatever it takes" in emergencies. They must be highly organized, know the software, and have good people skills.
Project Engineers
The project engineer must be a team player. He has to interact with all levels and departments within your organization. He must be technically competent in civil, mechanical, petroleum, or chemical engineering. The project engineer must have a solid field-presence and be extremely tenacious. All of the I's must be dotted. He must take safety very seriously. Experience and energy-level are important. The project engineer must have all the skills of the superintendent but with a focus on things technical.
